Rotherham deny Ipswich a Chance to narrow Leicester's lead to One Point

Thursday 8th of February 2024

Christ Tiehi's late strike thwarted Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna's efforts in trying to close Leicester City's lead at the top of the Championship table. Fred Onyedinma had given them an early advantage following heavy rainfall last month in this match-up that had to be postponed from its original date due to inclement weather.

Rotherham United and QPR FC both face relegation. Both clubs share one point.

Sam Nombe

Sam Nombe's first goal for the Millers brought relief and set up an exciting finish, after Fred Onyedinma provided an assist to Croydon-born forward who had misfired earlier. It came following Onyedinma's assist to Sam after he had earlier sent an attempt wide of goal.

Nombe's transfer from Exeter earlier this month for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of PS1m has brought him together with Exeter manager Matt Taylor at Rotherham on a four-year contract.

Nombe was thrilled to see Georgie Kelly break his own scoring drought from the bench against QPR but was denied his own goal as Wilson made an outstanding save.

Conor Chaplin

Conor Chaplin played an instrumental role in Ipswich's comfortable win at Rotherham, creating several chances for his teammates and adding another goal to his impressive tally this season.

Chaplin had his first chance on 14 minutes when Leif Davis found him via a free-kick routine, yet the striker failed to connect with it properly and missed. Chaplin then featured again on the stroke of half-time when he squared for Ladapo who couldn't get his shot on target despite three attempts from Chaplin himself.

Sam Morsy

Morsy has proven his value beyond physical challenges: He's become an effective creative threat who combines physical strength with smart passing to set up goals and assists for himself and teammates alike.

Kieran McKenna has also proven an invaluable liaison between players and management, sharing an outstanding professional relationship that has allowed his charges to adapt seamlessly to his unique style of play.

Fred Onyedinma's drive and cross set Sam Nombe up for his inaugural Millers goal before Leif Davis' free-kick allowed Morsy to level the scores after 19 minutes of play.

Jordan Hugill

Hugill joined on a permanent deal from Norwich City after impressing in League One for the Canaries. He made his debut that same month and has since scored eight goals from 15 starts.

Bournemouth maintained their one-point advantage at the top of the Championship with a comfortable victory at Rotherham. Tommy Elphick headed home a deep Charlie Daniels cross, before Callum Wilson completed their victory after halftime with an effortless finish.

Christ Tiehi presented The Millers with their best opportunity when he tried a driven effort on the edge of the box from outside but his effort went wide.

Georgie Kelly

Georgie Kelly has made waves at UCD, St Pats and Bohemians back home in Ireland before coming over to Rotherham as an unanticipated starter for Home Park on his first-team debut this month. At just 21-years-old he proved a hit among Rotherham supporters upon debuting.

Sam Nombe scored within four minutes after being set up by Tom Lees to open up scoring in this rescheduled match following Storm Babet last week, as Lees also produced an audacious 25-yard attempt that narrowly missed crossing over.

Sean Morrison

The Millers edged closer to the top two with an unimpressive victory at New York Stadium on November 7, rescheduled from October 20 due to storm-induced damage on the River Don.

Kieran McKenna made three changes to his side that began Saturday's 2-2 draw against Birmingham City, including Axel Tuanzebe's home debut and Kayden Jackson taking Omari Hutchinson's spot on the left wing. Jackson quickly caused problems for Birmingham and Holy was required to save from Smith's header as they attempted an early advantage.

Christ Tiehi

Christ Tiehi has added quality and strength to the Millers midfield since joining for a club-record fee this summer from Paris. At 25-years-old he boasts second tier experience having made 19 appearances for Wigan Athletic last season in addition to stints spent playing in both Czech Republic and Australia.

Kasey McAteer's header looked to put Leicester ahead at half time but was later ruled offside after referee Graham Scott consulted his assistant referee. This denied Kieran McKenna's team an away point but Christ Tiehi scored late to secure a draw and secure their precious away point.
