Manchester United 2-2 Brighton

Tuesday 26th of December 2023

Brighton is a seaside resort city and city located in East Sussex, England. Home to an abundance of attractions - Duke of York Cinema and Brighton Pier among them - Brighton boasts an incredible amount of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

Rachel Williams came off the bench to score an astounding 98th-minute equaliser and earn Manchester United a point against Brighton in Women's Super League (WSL) action, but remains dissatisfied that her side should have prevailed by more.

Goals from Elisabeth Terland and Ella Toone

Marc Skinner's side started the match strongly at Broadfield Stadium and nearly scored an instantaneous opener. Hannah Blundell sent in an inviting ball into the box which gave Jorelyn Carabali the opportunity to shoot over her own crossbar and score her goal.

Brighton goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley came out strong early to deny United. The former Olympique Lyonnaise Feminin striker made her first key save three minutes in, parrying away Melvine Malard's powerful effort from close range.

Brighton finally took the lead just past the halfway point after an excellent move saw Terland find space and strike a low shot past Mary Earps. But Brighton couldn't hold onto their advantage; Guro Bergsvand, Ella Toone and Rachel Williams each thought they had scored, only for their attempts to be denied by Mary Earps. Reds piled on pressure in the final 10 minutes; eventually winning a corner at this juncture created an opening for super sub Rachel Williams to score equaliser via header at this 98th minute corner won by Brighton which provided super sub Rachel Williams to strike with header header at Mary Earps and equalize with Mary Earps.

Guro Bergsvand’s last-minute header

Elisabeth Terland's early goal appeared to put Brighton on track for victory, but their opponents showed great precision during the second period. Maria Thorisdottir hit the post while Leah Galton shot over before Rachel Williams secured an equaliser late on for Marc Skinner's side.

Brighton threatened with another good chance after Libby Bance sent a pinball into the box, but Mary Earps made an excellent save to keep their goal out. Sweden international Emma Kullberg tested Earps as she shot wide with her left foot shot.

Bergsvand's header gave United hope, but Brighton refused to go down easily. Substitute Jacqui Hand and Gabrielle Rennie proved formidable down the left flank; during stoppage time Hand saw her flick over Emma Rolston saved. Williams scored an unlikely winner from a corner kick late on to ensure United secured two consecutive points and remain sixth in the table.

Rachel Williams’ 98th-minute equaliser

After an ambulance was delayed for 10 minutes in traffic, the game finally kicked off with Pauline Bremer hitting the crossbar and Jorelyn Carabali having her volley saved by former Red Devils goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley; United seemed likely to trail against one of the teams ranked second in WSL table. However, United pulled one goal back and scored their own equaliser shortly thereafter against an in-form side from Canada that were second place overall in WSL table.

Ella Toone provided a moment of brilliance as the Lionesses striker scored five goals despite an extended injury lay-off, creating magic with her long-range effort past Brighton goalkeeper Mary Earps in the 78th minute.

And then just when it looked as though Brighton had taken an unlikely lead with Guro Bergsvand's late header of a corner at the back post, Williams came into save United. Tapping one past goalkeeper Byron Fry to rescue a point, this goal marked Williams' fourth off the bench this season - more than any other player!

Skinner’s frustration

Rachel Williams scored late to secure a 2-2 draw between Manchester United and Brighton at Leigh Sports Village, leaving Marc Skinner's WSL side sixth in the league table but frustrated at how late goals have become a regular feature this season - they scored five late goals from 12 matches played so far!

United's starting lineup consisted of Hayley Ladd in central defence alongside Maria Thorisdottir and Hannah Blundell and Ona Batlle, flanked by Hannah Blundell and Ona Batlle. Jackie Groenen and Katie Zelem played midfield roles, while Martha Thomas, Alessia Russo, Ella Toone, and Leah Galton led an attack.

United of Manchester looked set for a comfortable victory until an unlikely late equaliser from Toone and Williams. Guro Bergsvand put Brighton ahead, only for Toone and Williams to rescue a point late on through an unlikely equaliser from Toone and Williams. Although United maintained their momentum by salvaging a draw against Brighton, Skinner was left frustrated that United had enough chances to win by five or six margins. They can move above Chelsea into second position on Thursday when hosting West Ham for their inaugural home game of the season.
