Directed by David O. Russell
Russell is back with an overstuffed, incongruous, stranger-than-fiction yarn attempting to dramatize (or satirize?) one of the most bizarre plots in American history. It's a lukewarm mess, one that feels like it could have been made by the Coen Brothers or Wes Anderson--at least at some points.
The movie features a stacked cast, including Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Alessandro Nivola, and Robert De Niro.
The film's trailer dropped today, and social media users took no time to point out that Russell has been accused of a number of sexually harassing allegations in the past. Some even reminded their followers of the accusations made against his 19-year-old niece, Nicole Peloquin, who claimed that Russell fondled her breasts and placed his hands near her genitals.
Starring Keke Palmer & Sacha Baron Cohen
Russell is looking to bounce back from last year's flop Amsterdam with his next project, Super Toys. Deadline reports that Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen are set to star as a groovy couple of 70s toy sales reps in the film.
The pair will play hippie toy salespeople on the road through Middle America as they try to save their marriage and energetic 12-year-old daughter. The movie will be written and directed by Russell, according to Deadline.
It's expected that the film will go up for sale at the European Film Market. CharlsRoven will produce for Atlas Entertainment alongside Matthew Budman of Dreamcrew.
Keke Palmer has had a big year in the spotlight, with her performance in Jordan Peele's Nope winning her a 'Best Supporting Actress' award at the New York Film Critics Circle. She has also lent her voice to several animated projects, including Pixar's Lightyear and the Netflix series Human Resources.
Release date
Russell has always been able to attract some of Hollywood's most celebrated actors with his movies, whether it's American Hustle or Silver Linings Playbook. His latest movie, Amsterdam, which is set to be released in November, looks like it will be no different.
It is being shopped at the European Film Market and will star Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen as a groovy couple on a life-or-death mission to save themselves, their marriage and their live-wire 12-year-old daughter while traveling the roads of Middle America in the 1970s.
The film is being helmed by Russell, who has made a number of dark comedy films like Spanking the Monkey and Three Kings. He has a long career in the industry and has received some positive critical feedback for his work. His last few projects have been acclaimed, with The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle earning him some Oscar nominations. This could be his next big hit.
